In our weekly roundup of the looks that are gaining fashion ground (and the ones losing their style street cred), we noticed a lot of celebs coordinating the color of their footwear to their dresses and a festive dress trend, plus one bag that seems like old news. For now.
Up: Matchy-matchy outfits. Stars didn’t shy away from color this week when it came to their dresses and their shoes. Rising actress and style star Lupita Nyong’o wore top to bottom red to the 12 Years a Slave Paris premiere, perfectly coordinating her Elie Saab sheath with Nicholas Kirkwood heels (and even a pair of matching studs!). We’re beyond excited to see what style high notes she turns out during award season. Choosing another rich color, Julia Roberts stunned in a purple peplum Proenza Schouler design with satin platform Charlotte Olympia pumps at the N.Y.C. premiere of August: Osage County. Kim Kardashian also selected a gemstone hue, going monochromatic in all gold at the Hollywood Reporter Women in Entertainment breakfast in Beverly Hills. The modest look nabbed her a higher approval rating than usual from PEOPLE readers.)
Up: Embellished waistbands. Maybe it’s the holidays, but dresses felt more festive than usual this week. Golden Globe nominee Amy Adams caught our attention in a silk Lanvin dress with a crystal-embellished waistline at the Her premiere in L.A. And not only did her waist look itty bitty, but the bedazzled accent made the design pop. At the same event, Olivia Wilde eschewed normal maternity wear for a second-skin David Koma design, also with crystals at the waist, that most readers are loving. Even Pink experimented with the trend in an Hervé Léger by Max Azria dress featuring fringe and beading at the waist, for a Billboard Women in Music event in N.Y.C.
Down: The mini evening bag. We liked Sheryl Crow‘s pink gown at the American Country Awards in Vegas, but the tiny handbag she teamed with the formal design totally messed with the vibe of her evening look. The remedy: A structured metallic clutch (perhaps this one?). Baby top-handle bags seem to be off the fashion radar, for now.
